DevilsSlideTunnel | DevilsSlideTunnel |
1st place prize, January 2015. Another hat trick! The Devil's Slide stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway was always one of the slowest and most dangerous. People died, and rock slide closures were frequent. After decades of lobbying, a bypass tunnel was finally built. This stereogram shows the South end. You can see the original road on the left which is now a hiking trail. I shot this from my friend's plane. I spotted the photo op and asked him to swoop in close. He managed it with some agressive flying, and I shot a burst of images as we blasted by. I was surprised that the shot worked out, which was largely to the credit of the borrowed DLSR's image stabilization. The shots were so rapid that it didn't require too much work to clone out differences in the surf.

2nd place prize, January 2015. As part of the Doyle Drive reconstruction, they are building a couple of tunnels in my neighborhood. I sometimes walk through the site and took this snap of a concrete approach being prepared for a pour. Rebar often makes for good stereograms. Here it makes nice leading lines. The lights continue those lines to the tunnel exit in the far background.

3rd place prize, January 2015. A beautiful day in the Marina on a path leading into Fort Mason. I took one photo as the bicyclist passed, then moved the camera a couple inches to the side and took a second photo. I then composed the stereogram and cloned the biker and his shadow from one side to the other. I had to airbrush a fake dark patch under the cloned bicycle to match the other view. Notice the last rays of sun glinting off a skyscraper downtown.

Honorable mention, January 2015. Same flight again. Just a little earlier as we were rounding the East side of Mt. Diablo. The clouds looked like tidal waves.

Campfire | Campfire |
Honorable mention, January 2015 and one of the top 5 Group B images of the year for 2015. Some friends built a campfire. At one point it looked so pretty that I stuck my 3D camera phone way in for this snap. It was difficult framing the shot in such heat but the result was worth it.

3rd place prize, April 2015. Testing out these $2 wide angle lenses I got that stick to cell phone cameras with little magnets. It's amazing what you can get for next to nothing these days!

PalaceSunset3 | PalaceSunset3 |
Honorable Mention, April 2015. This shot from a grassy knoll across the lake from the copula is where nearly all the photographers shoot but it turns out to be difficult to do well in 3D. I've gotten some nice shots from within or near the structure before but this is my first long shot that came out OK.

1st place prize, October 2015, one of the top 5 Group B images of the year for 2015, and an HM in the 2018 Oakland International. This is one of the many odd things glider pilots do when there's no wind.

RafiMemorialFlight | RafiMemorialFlight |
3d place prize, October 2015. I lost a friend this year. Rafi was a kind and funny old hang-glider pilot who died due to a mechanical failure on launch. He was cremated, and then we held a big wake for him at Fort Funston at which another pilot scattered his ashes from the sky over the spot where he live, loved, and died. This was the landing of that flight which was also his last.

Honorable Mention, for October 2015 and one of the top 5 Group B images of the year for 2015. Taken at a "ZomeTool party" in which Brandon here is helping to construct a 3D projection of a 4D object to be hung from the ceiling.
