Sheldon Green

Sheldon was my father. Born March 15th 1927, shortly before the Great Depression. His father Harry Green was a Polish immigrant and maker of artificial limbs. Sheldon took an early interest in mathematics and excelled in school. He earned a masters in mathematics, specializing in statistics. He then worked mainly in aerospace dealing with reliability. His most notable work was on the reliability of the Apollo 13 lunar descent engine which made him as important to saving the lives of the astronauts on that aborted mission in which that engine was used to return the crew to Earth, pushing it far beyond the reliability requirements of its original purpose without failing and stranding them in space.
